Breaking Trail

Len Marchand

and Matt Hughes

Growing up on the far corners of the Vernon reserve, little did Len—or anyone around him—realize that he would end up spending most of his life in Ottawa. The first elected Aboriginal member of parliament in Canada, Len Marchand was involved in some of the most exciting, heady days of Canadian politics. Breaking Trail is the astonishing story of an agronomist by training who fomented negotiations between Prime Minister Trudeau’s government and First Nations communities, established the Senate Committee on Aboriginal Issues, and became a Member of the Order of Canada in 1999.
