The Far Land

Eva MacLean

With the farewell prayer of her Presbyterian minister — “protect this young sister in that far land where sin doth abound and Satan lifteth up his head” — ringing in her ears, young Eva MacLean sets out from civilized Ontario to the far land of Hazelton in northwestern British Columbia in 1911. Once there, she turns a frontier town on its ear by doing what is not expected of a minister’s wife. Eager for adventure but fearful — as a sheltered young wornan of that era would be — Eva recounts her experiences in Hazelton with her minister/ veterinarian hushand, Dan. Explaining why he spends more time doctoring than preaching, he says to Eva, “I can reach more people by curing their horses than trying to save their souls.”
